AELRED also leads by itself an ambitious crop improvement program for miscanthus.
Miscanthus is a rhizomatous perennial grass originating from Asia. This grass stands as the most promising crop for biomass production under our climates. When established, a field of miscanthus produces regularly for more than ten years from 10 to 20 tons dry weight/ha/year, a superior yield comparing to forestry or a classical crop, set in similar conditions. Miscanthus culture needs few or even no input of chemical fertilizer or pesticide and can be cropped on marginal or polluted land. Thus miscanthus is especially well suited to an eco-friendly production scheme, and does not compete with food crops (sustainable agriculture).
Thanks to its PMM-derivate TRI-MISC™ technology, AELRED develops new miscanthus varieties with reduced establishment costs, thus breaking one of the hurdles limiting the development of this crop.
Boosted by environmental policies of the UE countries, the cultivated non-food biomass market is vowed to grow in order to meet the expected needs for biofuels, biomaterials, bioplastics and green chemistry derivatives, without impacting food production : AELRED aims to be a major contributor to the development of this market for biomass-dedicated crops.
